Words Hold Power, Whether You Believe It or Not
I believe words are powerful because they shape how we see ourselves, our lives, and what we believe is possible.
Thereās a verse in Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) that says:
āThe tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.ā
Basically, the words you speak about yourself, others, or life carry weight. They can lift you up or hold you back.
And full disclosure, Iām not Christian. Not that it matters, but if youāre already rolling your eyes because I just quoted the Bible, thatās okay, this might not be for you. That said, you absolutely donāt need to be Christian to get the point. I truly believe wisdom and truth can come from anywhere: Christianity, Kabbalah, Islam, Taoism, spirituality, science, same song, different tune. If you feel the same, I welcome your open-mindedness š¤
Because when you really sit with it, this idea shows up everywhere: what you speak, you reinforce. What you repeat, you become. And if words hold power, like so many traditions and teachings suggest, why wouldnāt we use them intentionally?
Iām extremely mindful of the things I say, especially about myself. Words swell. They linger. They plant seeds. So if Iām already speaking every day⦠why not speak things that support the life Iām actively working toward?
āBut Affirmations Are Cringe / Fake / Delusionalā
Hereās my question for the skeptics:
Have you ever said, āThis day couldnāt get any worse,ā and somehow⦠it did?
You already set the intention.
I can speak from personal experience when negativity became second nature for me, so did negative outcomes. I would casually call myself dumb, clumsy, and stupid. Iād speak badly about my life, my body, and other people, not even dramatically, just passively.
And shocker: my confidence was nonexistent. I was eating to pass the time, avoiding mirrors, avoiding myself.
So I flipped the script.
Instead of asking, āWhatās the worst that could happen?ā I started asking, āWhatās the best that could happen?ā
Why not believe something good? Why not speak something uplifting?
I actually challenge you: for 24 hours, speak positively about yourself, your life, and your circumstances. Notice how many times you have to catch yourself. If you try it, comment and tell me how it goes.
I Doubted Affirmations⦠Until I Tried Them
During quarantine, I was at one of my lowest points. I didnāt like myself. I had let myself go. I wasnāt moving my body, wasnāt motivated, and was very comfortable being⦠well, comfortable. (Nothing wrong with relaxing, being still, or doing nothing, but too much of anything can be harmful. In my case, I was overindulging, eating too much, and drinking too many whipped coffees⦠if you know, you know lol.)
I didnāt understand how chanting words, power posing, or mirror work could do anything.
Then I stumbled onto content about self-concept, becoming your highest self, and embodying the version of you that already has what you want. And the same things kept popping up:
- Affirmations
- Mantras
- Identity work
- Subconscious conditioning
- Mental imagery
I tried soaking in all the tips and techniques, but everything started to change the moment I focused on what I could actually control: how I spoke to myself. While looking in the mirror, I would affirm that I was worthy, capable, and deserving of love. I also began visualizing how Iād walk into rooms, imagining the presence my future self carried. I did this alone, often in dim lighting, because I still didnāt fully love how I looked.
And I kept going. I told myself I was worthy simply because I exist. That everything works out for my highest good. That Iām successful. That Iām supported. I repeated it so often that one day⦠I believed it.
Fake It Till You Make It ā Or Better Yet, Become Her
I fully believe in faking it till you make it, but really, itās about embodying before you see proof. The shift doesnāt happen without action.
If your dream version of you works out 4ā5 times a week, you donāt start there. You start with 1ā2. Small habits create big changes. You donāt wake up one day as her. You practice being her. And slowly⦠You become her.
Visuals, Notes, and Journaling: Tools That Actually Work
Iām very visual, so Pinterest became one of my go-tos for envisioning the future I wanted before I was actually living it. Iād save images that resonated with me, adding powerful quotes and affirmations I truly stan, like the one I keep coming back to: āLife begins where fear ends.ā It reminds me that you wonāt truly know what life has to offer unless you take the first step. You have to be brave, take the leap, and trust yourself. After all, you miss 100% of the shots you donāt take, so why not go for it?
I also kept notes filled with affirmations Iād repeat daily, not because I thought words would magically fix everything, but because I was so sick and tired of being stuck. I needed something to interrupt the cycle I was in, and putting thoughts into words, whether on my phone, in notes apps, or in my journal, gave me a place to experiment and create.
I journaled a lot, especially during transformative moments like moon cycles. Through journaling, I let go of what no longer served me, set clear intentions, and expressed gratitude as if I were already living the life I desired. Gratitude wasnāt about ignoring reality; it was about acknowledging the present while actively moving toward the future I wanted to create.
One Affirmation That Still Guides Me Today
You are worthy of unconditional love.
Not just romantic love, platonic, self-love, divine love. You donāt have to perform to be loved. Simply existing and showing up as you are is enough. The easiest thing I can do is be myself, and in being me, I canāt help but think, who wouldnāt love me just as I am? Thereās no one else like me, and thatās more than enough.
The biggest breakthrough for me wasnāt attracting external love; it was finally pouring all that energy back into myself. You canāt pour from an empty well, and I was running on empty for far too long. People will only meet you where you meet yourself. If you donāt show yourself love, respect, and care, others wonāt either.
Think of it like this: you have the option to be a hot cup of tea or a water bottle.
If youāre a hot cup of tea, people handle you with care, gently, deliberately, because they know if they arenāt careful, they could get burned. They honor the value of what you carry.
Or, you can be a water bottle, tossed around, barely noticed, treated without thought or care.
You canāt expect others to treat you with love and consideration if you arenāt handling yourself that way. The energy you put into caring for yourself is the energy others reflect back to you.
And that shift, learning to protect and nurture yourself first, starts with self-work.
Affirmations Donāt Work Without the Work
Affirmations work best when paired with:
- Action
- Self-awareness
- Healing old beliefs
- Rest
- Consistency
Itās about breaking old patterns while giving grace to the version of you that got you here. You donāt shame the old you; you thank them, then shed the skin. And when you reach a new level, you donāt judge others for being where you once were. Because judging others is really just judging yourself.
What People Misunderstand About Self-Work
Self-work isnāt just saying a few pretty words and expecting life to change overnight. Itās about intention, belief, and alignment, showing up consistently for yourself and your growth. Success looks different for everyone, and no one gets to tell you whatās possible for your life. It has to ring true to you, and you have to stay flexible along the way.
Some of the things I wanted most didnāt happen, and looking back, Iām incredibly grateful. Life not going exactly as planned is actually a blessing. If everything happened the way we expected, there would be no room for growth and no surprises to teach us something new.
We canāt know what tomorrow will bring, and thatās okay. What we do know is what today holds, and the choice of how we show up right now is entirely in our hands.
How Inner Work Changed My Life
Because of inner work and changing my self-talk, Iāve noticed real shifts in my life: Iām confident, I have strong boundaries, I protect my peace, Iām comfortable with who I am, and Iāve stopped obsessing over āfinding my purpose.ā
Iāve come to realize that our purpose is simply to exist and be the best version of ourselves in this lifetime. If you want a deeper perspective on purpose, I highly recommend this video from David Ghiyam, one of my favorite spiritual teachers.
If You Remember One Thing
Remember this!
You are worthy.

Not because of who loves you.
Just because youāre here.
