Gratitude and Perspective
I think one of the biggest traps we fall into as human beings is constantly focusing on what’s next.
The next goal.
The next relationship.
The next opportunity.
The next version of ourselves.
The next thing we think will finally make us feel fulfilled.
And in the process of chasing everything we don’t have…
We completely overlook everything we already do.
Tell me, when was the last time you genuinely stopped and appreciated the life you’re currently living?
Not the life you want.
The one you have right now.
Because if we are being honest, many of us are living in moments we once hoped, prayed, and wished for…
Yet somewhere along the way, we became so focused on wanting more that we forgot to appreciate what is already here.
You complain about the car you drive.
Meanwhile, someone else has been praying for any car at all so they can stop taking the bus every morning.
You complain about having to walk to school or work.
Meanwhile, someone else is praying for the ability to simply stand on their own two feet again.
You get frustrated because your WiFi is slow.
Meanwhile, there are families around the world without stable electricity.
You feel exhausted showing up to work every day.
Meanwhile, someone else has been applying for months, hoping someone gives them a chance.
You wish your apartment or house was bigger, prettier, newer…
Meanwhile, someone else is sleeping somewhere tonight, hoping one day they will have a place to call home.
It is all perspective.
And no, I am not saying your dreams are not valid.
I am not saying you should not want more for yourself.
Growth is beautiful.
Ambition is beautiful.
Wanting better for yourself is part of being human.
But somewhere along the way, we have become so obsessed with what is missing that we forget to honor what is already here.
And I think that applies to life in more ways than we realize.
There is a story I once heard called The Drowning Man.
A man was stranded on top of his roof during a flood.
As the water began rising, he started praying for God to save him.
Soon, a man came by in a rowboat and said, “Jump in, I can save you.”
The man refused.
“No, God is going to save me.”
Later, a motorboat came.
Again, he refused.
Then a helicopter flew overhead and lowered down a rope.
Once again, he said no.
“I have faith. God will save me.”
Eventually, the water rose, and the man drowned.
When he reached Heaven, confused and frustrated, he asked God:
“Why didn’t you save me? I trusted you.”
And God replied:
“I sent you a rowboat, a motorboat, and a helicopter. What more did you expect?”
And honestly…
Isn’t that exactly how so many of us move through life?
We pray for opportunities.
We pray for change.
We pray for guidance.
We pray for open doors.
But sometimes we become so attached to how we think life should unfold that we completely miss the blessings already being placed directly in front of us.
Sometimes life gives us exactly what we need…
just not in the packaging we expected.
And I can say from personal experience, some of the things I desperately wanted in life never worked out.
At the time, I thought I was being denied.
I thought I was being overlooked.
I thought life was going against me.
But looking back now?
I am grateful things did not go according to my plan.
Because sometimes what feels like rejection is protection.
Sometimes, closed doors are redirection.
Sometimes the things we think we want are nowhere near as good as what life is quietly preparing for us instead.
So yes…
Dream bigger.
Work hard.
Want more for yourself.
But do not become so focused on what is missing that you forget to appreciate everything that already exists around you.
Because what if the very things you complain about today…
are the exact things someone else has been praying for?
Perspective changes everything.
And maybe…
just maybe…
Life has already been blessing you this entire time..
