Becoming Comfortable In Your Own Presence š“Æš“‚ƒš“§ā™”

Why You Need To Get Comfortable Being Alone. į•™( ˵ •̀ į“— – ˵ )į•— ✧

So you want to be more independent.

Maybe you want to solo travel.
Maybe you want to start taking yourself out on dates.
Or maybe you simply want to stop feeling like you need other people in order to fully experience life.

Whatever it is, I truly believe learning how to enjoy your own company is one of the most important things a person can do.

Now, I do want to say this can come more easily for some people, depending on how they were raised and the environments they grew up in.

Personally, I’m an only child, so being alone has always felt a bit easier for me.

But I know for others that may not be the case.

I once had a peer tell me that after leaving college and living on her own, she struggled deeply with being alone because, growing up with siblings, she was always surrounded by conversation, noise, and constant presence.

Now, in her case, I understood completely because going from living with family to college roommates, and then suddenly being alone, is a pretty drastic shift.

But she did get me thinking about something deeper.

Have you ever noticed how some people genuinely struggle being by themselves?

And I don’t just mean being physically alone, I mean sitting with yourself, your thoughts, and your own presence.

Anyway, I started noticing this more and more in different people.

People who constantly need to be surrounded by others.

People who always need to be in relationships.

People who need constant stimulation, conversation, or distraction just to avoid sitting in silence.

And over time, it started to feel like this was more common than I originally thought.

Which made me start asking myself deeper questions.

Why are so many people uncomfortable with solitude?

Why does sitting alone with your thoughts feel so heavy for some people?

Why is silence something we try to escape instead of something we sit with?

And most importantly…

What happens when all the noise is gone?

Because if being alone makes you uncomfortable, I think it’s worth asking yourself why.

What exactly comes up for you in that stillness?

What are you trying not to hear when everything gets quiet?

And what would it feel like to actually sit with yourself without running?

Because I truly believe many people are not afraid of being alone…

They are afraid of being alone with themselves.

And I think that says a lot, but I also want to be clear…

There’s nothing wrong with loving your community and being around family and friends.

Connection is important.

But if you constantly need others in order to experience life… You will miss out on so much.

I know this because I used to be that person.

There were soooooo many moments growing up where I wanted to do things, go to the movies, go to events, try new experiences, but I wouldn’t go.

Not because I didn’t want to.

But because I didn’t want to go alone.

I was still very much in that mindset of what looks normal, what people would think, and how I would be perceived.

And out of fear of judgment, I would simply miss out on the experience altogether.

And I know I wasn’t the only one thinking like that.

I really started becoming more comfortable with solitude during COVID.

And yes, obviously, there was a literal pandemic happening, so being alone was necessary.

But spiritually, it also became a reset for me.

I didn’t have to perform.

I didn’t have to mask (obvi not talking about that N95, I kept that on me lolss).

I didn’t have to constantly be ā€œonā€ for other people.

And I think a lot of us don’t realize how often we do that in everyday life.

We become versions of ourselves that are more acceptable to others instead of just being who we actually are.

Which is exactly why learning to be alone matters.

Because solitude forces you to meet yourself.

Not the version you show the world, but you, the real you.

Now, of course, I’m not telling you to go book a solo trip across the world tomorrow.

Please don’t do that (UNLESS YOU FEEL CALLED TO DO SO, LOL).

Start small.

Go sit in a library alone.

Go to a cafƩ alone.

Go to the gym alone.

Take yourself somewhere intentionally.

Start building comfort in your own presence.

Because the goal isn’t isolation.

The goal is freedom.

Freedom to do things without needing permission or accompaniment from others.

The best way I can explain it is like training a muscle

You don’t build strength by training once in a while.

It’s built through consistency.

Repetition.

Time.

At first, it feels uncomfortable.

Awkward even.

But eventually your body adapts.

And what once felt heavy becomes second nature.

That’s exactly how independence works.

At first, doing things alone feels unnatural.

But the more you do it, the more normal it becomes.

Until one day you realize…

You’re completely comfortable in your own company.

And confidence works the same way.

A big reason I’m confident today is because I learned to fake it until I made it.

I know that sounds clichĆ©, but it’s true.

I envisioned the version of myself I wanted to become…

And I started embodying her.

Especially when I was alone.

That’s also where the idea of an alter ego comes in.

Think of artists like BeyoncƩ or Marilyn Monroe.

BeyoncƩ has Sasha Fierce, a version of herself she steps into when she needs confidence.

And I think that concept is powerful because sometimes confidence isn’t something you find… It’s something you step into.

Maybe it’s a name, maybe it’s an energy, maybe it’s just asking yourself what your highest version of self would do right now.

Even now, when I create or write, I’m tapping into a certain version of me.

A more aligned, expressive, confident version of self.

My higher self.

And I step into her whenever I need to.

Because confidence is energy.

It’s how you carry yourself.

And it directly affects how you move through life independently.

Because if you want to be independent, you first have to be comfortable with yourself.

And the only way to become comfortable with yourself…

Is to stop avoiding self.

So go take yourself out.

Go experience things alone.

Stop waiting for other people to give you permission to live your life.

Because life waits for no one.

And neither should you.

Always evolving,
Impera
