You can’t pour into everyone else while neglecting yourself
When it comes to this life, I’m constantly thanking the universe for the things we so easily overlook.
My breath. My hearing. My sight. The strength within my body. The simple ability to walk freely whenever I choose. The freedom to move through life independently without relying on anyone else just to exist in the world.
There’s a saying that goes you don’t appreciate your health until you’re sick… and wow, isn’t that something to unpack? Because it’s painfully true.
The second your nose is stuffed, and you can’t breathe properly, suddenly you remember how incredible it felt to simply exist normally. You miss tasting your food. You miss feeling energized. You begin thinking I can’t wait until I feel like myself again.
And that right there is proof that health is one of those things we rarely appreciate until it’s compromised.
Which is exactly why it’s so important to pour into our bodies.
Mobility. Agility. Stamina. Strength. Energy. These things matter far more than people realize.
Now, little backstory. I grew up overweight for several reasons we’re not getting into today… but now, as an adult who actively prioritizes health and wellness, I can look back and understand something I didn’t fully realize then.
I was trapped inside my own body.
And I don’t mean aesthetically. I mean physically.
There were experiences I couldn’t fully enjoy because my body limited me. Every day tasks felt exhausting. Movement felt like a chore. Existing felt heavy.
And I hid.
I hid from myself. I hid from other people. And somewhere along the way, food became comfort rather than fuel.
Now don’t get me wrong… I still absolutely love food. I am very much a foodie. That has not changed.
What has changed is my relationship with food.
I’ve become significantly more mindful about what I consume. I pay attention to how certain foods make me feel. I think about what ingredients are actually doing for my body rather than only focusing on taste.
I honestly haven’t eaten fast food in years because at this point, my body genuinely rejects it. And I’ve noticed something interesting… when you begin removing a lot of these overly processed, artificial foods from your diet, your body starts recognizing what no longer serves it.
It literally begins rejecting what once felt normal.
Now obviously I’m speaking from a place of privilege because healthier eating can absolutely become expensive… especially when you like shopping in the crunchy aisle like I do.
Because trust me… those “healthy” snacks? Ridiculously expensive.
And yes, I still love my little snacky snacks. Give me some Siete chips, SmartSweets, or any cute, healthier alternative, and I’m happy. But because of that, I try to cook as much as possible and limit processed foods whenever I can.
Because ultimately, every food choice is an investment.
Sometimes in the moment, something tastes amazing… but later, your body is the one paying the price for what you consumed.
Cue jazz snaps.
Now, before anyone starts spiraling, I am not saying cut out everything you enjoy. Absolutely not.
What I am saying is that there is almost always a healthier alternative.
Take brownies, for example. I don’t know if y’all have seen that sweet potato brownie recipe going around lately, but let me tell you… They taste ridiculously good. Rich, fudgy, delicious.
I made a batch for one of my peers and her son, and they had absolutely no idea they were “healthy.”
And honestly? That made me so happy.
Because I love showing people that you can still enjoy the foods you love without forcing your body to suffer for it.
Another thing I do to prioritize my health is getting colonics about once a month.
A colonic, for those unfamiliar, is a process where warm filtered water is gently introduced into the colon to help flush out waste and support digestive health.
And while everyone has different opinions on them, I personally find them incredibly helpful for digestion and overall gut health. Especially for people who struggle with regular bowel movements or constantly feel backed up.
And speaking of digestive health… colon cancer rates have been steadily increasing, particularly among younger adults, which honestly should concern more people.
And I truly believe the way we consume hyper-processed food on a daily basis plays a bigger role than we’d like to admit.
From the Starbucks drinks… to the fast food… to the ultra-processed snacks… it all adds up.
You only get one body.
Why wouldn’t you prioritize it?
And finally… movement.
Movement is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
I don’t care if that looks like a 30-minute walk. Going to the gym. Doing yoga at home. Tai Chi. Pilates. Dancing in your bedroom. Following a random Tae Bo workout on YouTube.
Just move your body.
And if you’re someone who is trying to become more intentional about building healthier habits or creating a wellness routine for yourself, here are a few things I genuinely think are worth investing in.
Not because you need fancy products to become your best self… but because sometimes having the right tools makes showing up for yourself a little easier.
❥A good yoga mat for stretching, mobility work, or those late-night reset sessions.
❥Some at-home weights or resistance bands for the days you can’t make it to the gym but still want to move your body.
❥A cute workout set because sorry NOT sorry lols… but sometimes looking good absolutely helps with motivation and I stand by that.
❥And honestly, anything that helps make wellness feel exciting for you.
Because investing in your health should never feel like punishment. It should feel like choosing yourself.
And the beautiful thing about movement is… it does not always have to look intense.
If you’re exhausted after a long day? Fine.
Maybe that movement looks softer.
Maybe it’s Yin Yoga.
Maybe it’s stretching.
Maybe it’s simply lying on the floor and reconnecting with yourself for thirty minutes.
But do something.
We’re seeing more posture issues, spine issues, mobility issues, and sedentary lifestyles becoming the norm because so many people spend the majority of their day sitting. Working. Driving. Scrolling. Existing in stillness.
And I’m not speaking to you here. I’m speaking with you.
I personally try to get to the gym 4–5 times a week because that is time I intentionally invest into myself.
And yes… I hear the excuses already.
I’m tired after work.
I commute.
I have dinner to make.
I have kids.
I’m exhausted.
And I get it. Truly.
But let me ask you something.
If you can dedicate eight hours to your job… hours to your family… hours to everyone else in your life… why can’t you dedicate even one hour to yourself?
How can you continuously pour into everyone around you while refusing to pour into your own cup?
You wonder why you feel drained… but when was the last time you intentionally invested in yourself?
Because in order to show up as the best mom, sister, brother, dad, employee, friend, partner… whatever role you carry… You have to prioritize yourself first.
That is not selfish.
That is necessary.
And even if someone thinks prioritizing yourself is selfish… who gives a f***?
You came into this life alone. You will leave alone.
Enjoy this life.
Help others, yes… but help yourself first.
Because where I’m at right now… what I choose to eat, how I choose to move, the habits I build daily…
They are setting the foundation for how I’m going to feel tomorrow.
And honestly… so are yours.
