The Best Grounding Techniques for Anxious Overthinkers Who Need Peace

My anxious baddies, stand up!

If you’re an overthinker, you already know the cycle. The overanalyzing. The what-ifs. The constant thinking about what could happen instead of what is actually happening. Your mind starts creating entire scenarios about a future that hasn’t even manifested yet, and somehow, you’re already stressing about how you’re going to handle something that hasn’t happened.

And what’s interesting is that when we’re anxious, our minds tend to automatically search for what could go wrong.

What if this happens?

What if they don’t like me?

What if I fail?

What if everything falls apart?

But what if it goes right?

Why is that possibility so much harder for us to imagine?

Now, I’m not saying you can simply think your way out of anxiety or that every negative experience happens because you “created” it. Life is going to life. We don’t control everything that happens to us.

But we do have free will. We have agency. We have the ability to choose how we respond, what we continue to feed our minds, and what beliefs we allow to take root.

And sometimes, our minds have simply been conditioned to look for the negative.

Maybe it came from family. Maybe peers. Society. Social media. Past experiences. Things you’ve been told about yourself. Things you’ve experienced that taught you to expect the worst.

So many things outside of ourselves can influence the way we think.

And eventually, we can start criticizing ourselves instead of encouraging ourselves. We become our own biggest critic instead of our biggest fan.

And honestly? That’s sad.

Because when you realize that you have to live with yourself every single day, you should be one of the main people pouring into you.

So if you’re someone who deals with anxiety, overthinking, or those moments when your mind feels like it has completely taken over, let’s talk about some grounding techniques that can help you come back to yourself.

1. Come Back to Your Breath

The first thing I do when I notice my heart beating faster, my breathing getting out of rhythm, or my thoughts becoming overwhelming is focus on my breath.

Nothing complicated.

I take a deep breath in for four seconds, hold for four seconds, and slowly release for four seconds.

I’ll usually repeat this two or three times, depending on how anxious I’m feeling.

And honestly, even doing it once can make me feel a little more present.

The goal isn’t necessarily to make every anxious thought disappear immediately. You’re giving your body a moment to slow down while reminding yourself:

I am here. I am safe in this moment. I can take this one breath at a time.

Breathing exercises are one of those things you can practice even when you’re not anxious, too. That way, when you do find yourself overwhelmed, you already have a tool you know how to use.

2. Play Something That Shifts Your Energy

Okay, now we’re getting a little “woo-woo”.

One thing I love doing when my energy feels off is playing frequencies, calming music, meditation sounds, or honestly just a song that makes me feel GOOD.

Our brains and bodies respond to sound and music, and personally, I believe energy plays a huge role in how we experience ourselves and our environment.

Now, I’m not here to tell you that a specific frequency is going to magically cure your anxiety because I don’t want to make scientific claims that I can’t back up.

But if listening to certain sounds helps you relax, shifts your mood, or gives you a sense of peace—use it.

Search for frequencies, meditation music, calming sounds, sound baths, or whatever resonates with you on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you listen to music.

You can even play something calming while doing your breathing exercises.

Sometimes you don’t need to sit in silence with your thoughts.

Sometimes you need to change the soundtrack.

3. Move Your Body

If you’re sitting there spiraling, continuing to sit there and spiral probably isn’t going to make the spiral any better.

So move.

Shake your body. Stretch. Do some jumping jacks. Do a few push-ups. Dance around your room. Scream into a pillow if you need to. 😂

Or simply go for a walk.

Give your body something else to focus on.

Movement can be a powerful way to interrupt the cycle of sitting inside your own head.

And if you go on that walk and you’re still thinking about whatever triggered you, that’s okay.

Use the walk to ask yourself questions instead of continuing to ruminate.

What exactly is making me feel this way?

Does this thought make sense?

Has this actually happened, or am I worrying about something that hasn’t happened yet?

What evidence do I have for this thought?

If it did happen, what would I actually do?

You’re confronting the feeling instead of allowing it to run the entire show.

Sometimes anxiety gets louder when we’re trying desperately to avoid it. You don’t always have to fight the feeling. Sometimes you can acknowledge it, understand it, and allow it to pass.

Remember: nothing has to be inherently good or bad for you to learn from it. Sometimes it simply is what it is.

You are a human having a human experience.

Give yourself grace.

4. Pour Into Yourself

Now we’re getting into self-soothing.

And I really want to emphasize how important it is to learn how to emotionally regulate yourself.

When anxiety hits, what do you immediately reach for?

Your phone?

Someone else?

Distraction?

Reassurance?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting support from other people. We are human beings, and connection matters.

But I also think it’s important to learn how to sit with yourself and comfort yourself.

When anxiety strikes, start pouring into yourself the way you would pour water into a flower.

Tell yourself:

This feeling will pass.

I don’t have to figure everything out right now.

I am capable of handling whatever comes my way.

I am allowed to slow down.

I am safe in this moment.

My thoughts are not facts.

I don’t have to believe everything my mind tells me.

I can choose peace over panic.

I trust myself to handle one moment at a time.

Sometimes you need to become the voice in your own head that you desperately wish someone else would be.

Be gentle with yourself.

5. Unplug and Get Quiet

If you’re somewhere safe and you have the opportunity to unplug, take it.

Put the phone down.

Turn off the notifications.

Step away from social media.

Close your laptop.

And give yourself some silence.

You can sit down, lie down, meditate, journal, pray, or simply exist without consuming anything.

And if connecting with the divine or a higher power is part of your spiritual practice, this can be a beautiful time to reconnect.

You don’t have to force yourself into some perfect meditation pose either.

Maybe you sit.

Maybe you lie down.

Maybe you walk.

Maybe you close your eyes and breathe.

Maybe you talk to God, the universe, your higher self, or simply sit quietly with yourself.

There isn’t one “right” way to reconnect.

Sometimes peace comes when you stop adding more noise.

6. Go Outside and Connect With Nature

And now for my nature girlies.

Go outside.

Touch the grass.

Take your shoes off if you feel comfortable.

Stand barefoot on the earth.

Sit under a tree.

Go for a walk.

Look at the sky.

Feel the sun.

Listen to the birds.

Let yourself actually notice where you are.

I know this might sound a little out there for some people, but if connecting with nature resonates with you, try it.

There’s something grounding about stepping away from screens, walls, noise, and responsibilities and remembering that you’re part of something much bigger than whatever is currently stressing you out.

Mother Gaia is going to keep doing what she’s doing whether you figure out that email, relationship, conversation, decision, or hypothetical future scenario today.

Sometimes you need that reminder.

7. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique

Now, if you’re brimming with anxiety and need to shift your attention quickly, try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique.

Look around and identify:

5 things you can see.

4 things you can hear.

3 things you can touch.

2 things you can smell.

1 thing you can taste.

This technique forces your attention away from the imaginary future your mind is creating and brings you back into the environment you’re actually in.

And this is exactly why I always have gum on me. 😂

Having something you can chew or suck on can give you another sensory experience to focus on when your thoughts are getting loud.

The goal is to come back to right now.

Because right now is the only moment you are actually living.

You Don’t Have to Believe Every Thought You Think

At the end of the day, grounding isn’t about never feeling anxious again.

It’s about learning how to come back to yourself when anxiety tries to pull you away.

Your mind may create a million possibilities.

That doesn’t mean they’re going to happen.

You may have a scary thought.

That doesn’t mean it’s true.

You may feel anxious.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong.

A thought is a thought. A feeling is a feeling. Neither one automatically gets to become your reality.

And I want you to remember something:

Just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s your thought.

Some thoughts are conditioned. Some are fear. Some are old stories. Some are things you’ve absorbed from other people. Some are simply your brain trying to protect you by preparing for every possible outcome.

You don’t have to judge yourself for having them.

You can simply notice them.

Breathe.

Ground yourself.

Question them.

And choose what you want to give your attention to.

You are not powerless inside your own mind.

You can take your power back.

And rather than creating a prison inside your mind, make it a garden—a place for growth, flourishing, peace, and abundance.

A place where you can learn.

A place where you can evolve.

A place where you can return to yourself again and again.

Because your mind should be one of the safest places you have.

And when it isn’t, you can learn how to make it one.

Come back to yourself.
Come back to your breath.
Come back to the present.
Come back to peace.

Keep evolving. 🌱
